2023 Hātea Grand Prix – Event 3 Results
Round 3 of the 2023 Hātea Grand Prix got off to a delayed start when the race director made the call to postpone by 10 minutes due to a road traffic accident. This writer is certain he wouldn’t have delayed it if he were running late :-), alas it was his amazing wife who alerted him to the potential issue of numerous runners being delayed for the start including herself… so it was a good call.
This week the course was much drier, with zero puddles present but some lengthy well watered grass to slow down leg turn over. A nice treat for the finishers this week, came in the form of some fizzy refreshments, Maria loved them so much she has promised us all beers and cocktails to finish next week. Maria claims the hill got bigger this week compared to last, I suspect with some booze waiting at the end next week the hill will have all but disappeared!
Congrats to all 46 finishers this week, 5km is still an endurance distance afterall, you are all amazing. Thanks also to the epic volunteers for donating their time to execute on these events, I’m reliably informed the course markings this week were top notch (probably because the race director didn’t do it this week). Thanks again to the incredible generousity of Amanda & Des Imms from Trek, Trail & Fish for the spot prizes, if you haven’t been to their shop yet, you need to, it’s an incredible asset to the Whangarei trail running community, please go and support them.
Finally, today’s run represented the final shake out for a few Hatea Run members, prior to their assault on the Tarawera Ultra Trail event on this weekend down in Rotorua. We wish all the best to Gillian & Steve Trass, Lea & Mark Callan, Shannon-Leigth Walker, Ian Birch, Glenn Fulton, Dwayne Collecut and Sam Rout.
